There’s lots to do in a mall but walking around such a large area is not an enjoyable prospect for people with mobility challenges or the elderly. myUDAAN, the mobile app, has launched a wheelchair assistant service at malls in Navi Mumbai.

A weekend at the mall is something everyone in Uma Marolia’s family looks forward to, but the 56-year-old prefers not to go. After she injured her right leg in an accident some years back, Uma is unable to walk for too long.

    Wheelchair Assistance

  • Wheelchair Taxis

A wheelchair taxi provides private transportation services for wheelchair-bound people. One can travel to medical appointments, work, social activities, and retail stores. It reduces the need for wheelchair-bound individuals to rely on friends and family members to meet their transportation needs.

Most of all it gives a sense of dignity and independence to a person in a wheelchair.

If you have ever seen a person in a wheelchair trying to get into the regular mode of transport in India, either it is just impossible or getting into cab/Auto becomes very stressful. Wheelchair taxis offer great hope here. Most of the wheelchair Taxis use tallboy designed cars into their fleet for easy ingress and exit, these cars are also equipped with ramps, hydraulic lifts to ease ingress into wheelchair taxi. Drivers & Assistants are sensitized on wheelchair handling.

Wheelchair Taxi operators also provide insurance to cover any liabilities while transporting customers. Booking a wheelchair taxi is fairly simple just call myUDAAN, ezymov, or Mobicab.

  • Welcome to our World!!! During COVID-19

Welcome to our World!!! During COVID-19

Until a few days ago Mumbai was brimming with activity, our unstoppable Mumbai. The city is always on the move, so much so that it never sleeps. We share a love-hate relationship with Trains, Buses, Cabs, Auto and lately Metro. We complain often but know deep in our hearts that very few cities in the world can provide such mobility. But now, you see what you have never seen or might never see again Mumbai Lock down. All of us are confined, just waiting for this to end and go out.

While we wait, we should now wonder about people amongst us who have been waiting to go out, travel, be free, be financially independent.

Yes, there are such people, Persons with Disabilities.

Isn’t it time to set them Free.

We should take a moment and reflect, isn’t Mobility a basic right for all, Shouldn’t a person with Disability independently travel either to a Mall, a Cinema Hall or a community Garden. Shouldn’t our infrastructure be inclusive?

A couple of Lockdown days and we are impatient, but the PwD (Person with Disabilities) has always been under lockdown.

  • What is the role of friendship in caring for People with disability

What is the role of friendship in caring for People with disability

Ravi, Founder at myUDAAN is a Person with a disability and above that, a very good friend People think being friends with someone with a disability is special, that not everyone can do it or it is something to be proud of. This is a fallacy no one is a hero for being friends with someone with a disability.

Being friends with a person with a disability isn’t something that should be different or special. It should be the same as being friends with anyone else. Because in many ways, it is the same. People with disabilities are just like everyone else.

I am now more knowledgeable, patient and non judgmental

Being friends with someone with a disability doesn’t mean you are a good person, but it can improvise you as a human being. I realize now how people with disabilities are often wrongly overlooked. Because of my friendship with people with disabilities, I am now more knowledgeable, patient and nonjudgmental.

Role of Friendship in caring for someone with Disability

    How to be a Friend

Caring for each other should be a part of any friendship, whether or not a disability is involved. And remember, ‘disability’ covers countless conditions that affect people’s movements, senses, and activities in completely different ways, so each person will have unique needs. If you’re ever unsure of how to treat someone, being honest and asking them is always the way to go- at the end of the day, they’re your friend. Being a good friend can turn a terrible day into an okay day, which may not seem like much, but can mean the world to them.

Not sure what your friend can/can’t do, Ask.

Planning an activity and you think your friend might not be able to go, make sure to still ask them. They feel they are welcome, considered and included .Never assume what your friend can or can’t do or exclude them from being invited.

    Accessibility is not an afterthought

When planning for an evening out, consider the needs and preferences of your friends before you make your plans, rather than after. Planning to get a drink? Research places nearby that have wheelchair access. Going to a restaurant? Pick a quieter place for your friend who’s hard of hearing. It’s not too difficult, and it will be greatly appreciated

Being Fun is great, but be sensitive

Just be open to the fun. Joking is a healthy part of friendship, but know what things are a no go. If there has been an incident around disability do not bring it up. Some people I know are extremely funny about their disability, let them set the note

    Add to positivity

If your friend is positive about their condition, encourage that. If they comment that they’re having a good day with their disability, let them know that you’re happy for them!

Lastly, Just be a good friend
